Pamela Stewart-Pearson
Sculpture
Background
After spending time at the City & Guilds of London School of Art, carving the type of subjects perfected by Grinling Gibbons, she found her work was becoming increasingly detailed. Eventually this led her to start carving Netsuke, the ultimate in tiny carving.
She tries to impart as much movement as possible into each piece and to include surprises so that the observer has to spend time studying the carving rather than seeing everything with a single glance.
There are very few people in the world who carve Netsuke. Pamela works entirely by hand with the help of magnification to achieve the fine detail necessary. Each tiny carving requires many hours of painstaking work with small rasps and knives.
