Background

Nicola Hanman hand builds ceramic pieces which are fired using the “naked raku” technique. The highly tactile nature of her forms is enhanced through many hours of burnishing with a polished pebble which creates a pleasing satin finish. No two pieces are identical as naked raku firings produce random crackle patterns on the surface of the pots.

Nicola has also been exploring the possibilities offered by pitfiring. She uses various oxides together with seaweed, sea lavender and other organic materials.

Nicola also occasionally make animal sculptures, which she decorates with oxides and coloured slips. These are suitable for placing in an outdoor setting.
