Meriel Lee

Textile Maker

Background

Meriel is a self taught fabric artist who creates her unique, vibrant pieces from multiple layers of textile, building layer upon layer, allowing sub-layers to become visible or obscured within her work. She combines different materials such as fabrics, previously used clothing, waste from silk manufacture, yarns, feathers, new and found objects that catch her eye or fascinate her.

She chooses colours and textures to construct stunning, abstract palimpsest pieces by stitching, cutting, layering, felting, combining, fraying, tearing, re-layering and reworking to form artefacts that are sometimes delicate, translucent, playful or just flamboyant! She wishes to allow the viewer to develop their own interpretation of the process and creative response to her work.

She learned her craft through structured teaching, workshops and online special interest groups that have inspired her, but mostly through joyful experimentation.
