Background
Mary has been working close to West Sedgemoor for the past 40 years. It’s changing and atmospheric landscape has been the inspiration for her oxidized stoneware pottery, Somerset Countryware. Her work is thrown on a kick wheel, a gentle process where mind and body work rhythmically in a quiet way.
She uses slab building and press moulding for larger items. Colour is achieved by slips rather than glazes. Decoration techniques such as paper resist, stencilling & sgraffito are used.
Mary attended a studio ceramics course in the early 1970s. She still applies all the disciplines she was taught by practising ceramicists on that course.
