Background
Helen completed her 3 year apprenticeship at the Royal School of Needlework in 2009. Based in Somerset she has set up her own business called ‘The Bluebird Embroidery Company’ and works as a free-lance embroiderer and tutor.
Helen combines her love for wildlife and embroidery to create detailed and realistic one -off pieces of artwork. Helen particularly enjoys using the beautiful hand embroidery technique known as Silk Shading, or ‘painting with a needle’ where she will use single strands of coloured threads, each threadad up into its own needle and used simultaneously to build up the texture and movement of fur or feathers.
For her latest collection, Colour In Flight, Helen has used mixed media to create studies of the movement and colours of British birds while in flight. These pieces are created using inktense pencils, acrylic paint and sometimes resin which are then combined with silk shading hand embroidery.
