David M Brown
Lettercutter/Sundial Maker
Background
After 40 years teaching Physics, David turned a hobby into a business and became a letter-cutter in slate, stone and wood. He had tuition from Tom Perkins, Ieuan Rees, Andrew Whittle and Martin Wenham.
He carves memorials and inscriptions of all kinds but specialises in sundials (210 made in 30 years). Construction, design and consultancy work encompasses all of UK. Valued sundial commissions include four in Oxford colleges, Penshurst Place (Kent), the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, and Minehead sea-front (for the Queen’s Golden Jubilee).
He has made a unique slate double horizontal sundial.
