Derek Richards
Woodworking
Background
Derek Richards has been carving working decoy ducks and wildfowl in the traditional American style since the late eighties. Having discovered one of America’s unique folk art forms while living in the USA, he subsequently studied and worked with America’s leading contemporary carver, Mark McNair in Virginia.
Using only traditional carving tools, Atlantic White Cedar and oil paints, his birds have a very individual style and have become highly collectable. He appears as one of the Craftsmen in the recently published book by Derek Reay entitled ‘Significant Figures in Art & Craft Today’.
